GNH Partners aims to create meaningful change at the nexus of impact investment and international development, advancing new sustainable social businesses in emerging markets around the world. Our unique approach is guided by the principle of Gross National Happiness (GNH) and focuses on achieving a balance of stable financial returns and enhanced environmental and social wellbeing.

Our dedicated team of Bhutanese and international investment professionals has deep expertise in the Bhutan market. We are the first full-service FDI consultancy operating in Bhutan and we seek to provide our clients with a range of services including assistance with national and regional FDI and other regulatory approvals; political, economic and cultural consulting; and capital raising from both FDI investors and local partners.

In addition to our consultancy, GNH Partners current Bhutan-focused impact investment fund provides a committed pool of capital for initial investments and follow-on support both to existing Bhutanese businesses seeking money for growth and to scale their GNH impact, and to new businesses in targeted areas including renewable energy, agriculture, tourism, IT, healthcare and education.

Gross National Happiness (GNH) is the socioeconomic development philosophy conceived by His Majesty the 4th King of Bhutan, Jigme Singye Wangchuck, in 1972 as a more meaningful measure of progress than Gross National Product (GNP) alone. Central to the concept of GNH is the belief that happiness is possible when thoughtful public policies and development deliberately coincide to create a secure and peaceful environment in which the needs of body and mind are met and in balance.

Over the years GNH has been distilled into 4 key pillars of inquiry and measurement: sustainable and equitable socioeconomic development; preservation and promotion of culture; conservation of environment; and good governance. This metric has been used since 2008 by Bhutan’s government as a screening tool to ensure that any new policy and development initiatives being contemplated will have no negative impacts on GNH.

GNH Partners is the first private sector impact investment and development firm to apply GNH metrics to our investment criteria; to the design, development and management of new businesses; and the products and services those businesses put into the public domain. By using GNH to align the often disparate elements of investment and development we are seeking to create tangible and sustainable economic, social and environmental returns.

The Bhutan Fund fully subscribes to assessing the ethical implications of each investment and is committed to making a positive impact. The Bhutan Fund is the first fund in the world to use the principles of GNH as a core element of its investment criteria and monitoring framework.
